Pedigree refers to your beagle's family tree and shows heritage and genetic qualities. Where did you get Buster from? Do you get the actual registration papers from the AKC (or similar if you're overseas) for him?

Here in the U.S. the AKC recognizes 13" beagles and 15" beagles as breed standards, though it's very difficult to tell how big a beagle will get as a puppy, but the breeder can look at the pedigree to give you a educated guess.

From the AKC's site:

Thirteen Inch--which shall be for hounds not exceeding 13 inches in height.
Fifteen Inch--which shall be for hounds over 13 but not exceeding 15 inches in height. http://www.akc.org/breeds/beagle/index.cfm

That being said...as a mother to a field beagle... if you found out your beagle was not a standard or registered beagle would you love him any less? If not, don't pay attention to how much he should weigh, what is coloring should be, or how tall he should be according to standards and just love him for him. Not every beagle looks like Uno, and my red & white field beagle is actually registered and accepted by the AKC.

My 9 year old Beagle is 19 inches.  He's 42 pounds and not overweight; just big boned!

Do you measure dogs from their head or their withers? (sorry i'm used to horses lol).

I measured my beagle before, i knew she was bigger compaired to other beagles, she's 16" at the wither.

I acctually like the bigger beagles and if I was to get another, i would look at getting a big one, like Kate.

Hi All

Thanks for the replies.

Buster is a pure pedagee we have all the papers.

I measure for height from feet to shouder and length - neck to tail.

He is lemon and white as you can see from pictures but I have noticed alot of them ones seem to bigger than the tri coloured ones and also his face and ears look a bit different.

I mean dont get me wrong i still love him and to me he is the best beagle out there! hehe sorry guys but you'd say the same about your own!

Hallie is around 11 inches from the floor to her shoulders. Everyone here has her beat! My beagle Hallie is from field lines as abby is and she's far from the beagle standard, her ears aren't quite long enough, her topline is too sloped, and her eyes are too big! lol I still love my girl, if buster is big it's more to love, right?

My 4-month old beagle is about 15 inches tall, a regular height for a beagle his age. His eyes are really small, the bluest eyes I have ever seen, and to me, he looks a bit puny. I can't stop imagining how he would change after he turns a year old...

Sounds to me like your beagle is a Patch hound it's bloodline developed by Willet Randall in the late 1800's early 1900's They are accepted by AKC, UKC, ARHA and every other creditable registry I can think of they are generally larger beagles as there primary breeding was to run hare on snow in upstate New York and Canada.

Measuring is done at the withers "front shoulders" with the front legs being directly under the shoulders.

Beagles come in many shapes and sizes but people often forget what they were bred for originally and expect them all to look a certain way and act a certain way. Enjoy your hounds and I encourage all beagle owners to get them into the wild weather or not you like to hunt it is great exercise for them to run around.

There is no Beagle on Record for the tallest Beagle. Although there is for the oldest and biggest Beagle, The biggest Beagle on record was in Decatur Illinois, weighed in at 213.4 lbs in 1927.ChaCha, ChaCha was also the oldest Beagle at 28 years.

The Beagle has supposively been around before the Romans only known as the Sight Hound and Scent Hound. The Beagle was crossbread with a Buck Hound to become a Fox Hound in England

The Beagle has the similar features to that of the Bassett Hound and the  Dachshunds.  My Beagle, Hunter has more of the Bassett Hound features with his big paws, sad droopy eyes, and long ears.

The Buck Hound was used asa hunting dog that ran in packs for hunting deer in England, although there are a few here in the uS in states like Montana. They are of a Lemon and White color, larger than a Fox Hound, and like the Fox Hound they are used with horses. There are clubs called Horse and Hound that feature the Buck Hound as well as the Fox Hound and yes even the Beagle as the Beagles hunt in packs.

So there is no way of telling how tall the beage will get, but the average size is 13" to 15"

Love My Hounnd
