Hello I am SundaeOwner and I have a beagle that is constantly wild and runs away to the neighbor's yard when we let him out sometimes! He also whines in his crate and bites my hand all the time! Does anybody have any suggestions?

Glad I am not the only one with a wild beagle! Never owned one before so am not much help in the suggestion department, but I can certainly sympathise with any problems you may encounter as I am likely to encounter them also.

Well, thanks, because my beagle still has some of the problems I named, although he's gotten over some of them. He whines occasionally, and still bites everything. Anyway, thanks for responding!

Hi Sundaeowner..
I don't know if u'r still in this forum or not, but i would like to share my experience with Vina. She's 5 month old, a wild and aggresive puppy I dare say. She likes to chew EVERYTHING, including some stuffs that dangerous to her health (i.e. SILICA GEL!!). If we try to get the stuffs out of her mouth, she will growl and bite us, really bite us to defend her 'food'. A friend told us to attract her with real food she likes when she chews things-she-doesn't-allow-to-eat. And voila! It works! She instantly drops the 'food' and runs to me. :)
Anyway, how's the progress with your beagle? |

Hello fellow beagles owners,
Im the proud mother of an 18 month old beagle named BOB, and a 7 month old beagle named Betty. Before we got Betty, Bob was also a very wild puppy and chewed on anything (ex. cell phones, sunglesses, dvd cases, decorations, even the coffee table). Later on i found out it was because he was bored, after i started taking him for long walks, play dates and dog park trips the excess chewing STOPPED he also out grew out of that stage. Patience your beagle will grow out of it too. Never had any agression problems with either of my beagles, but beagles can be very stubborn so just let them know biting PERIOD will not be tolorated. |

If they are biting you at a young age in an aggressive nature you need to put a stop to it they wont be small forever and a cute nip now will hurt a lot more.
Beagles are a high energy breed who have been bred for hundreds of years for endurance as a hunting breed if you cannot provide them with a focus with all that energy or area they can run off some steam they are going to release it anyway they can. Like a child imagine your beagle puppy is like a kid with A.D.H.D. all juiced up on a sugar high from candy with no toys or area to run around in you need to provide them with structured exercise that will stimulate them both mentally and physically. Try teaching them to fetch if your having trouble with basic commands like come then buy an electronic training collar and when they dont listen use it. Trust me a small shock is much better then losing your pet because you lost control of it and it got ran over or attacked someone. |

It's going great, actually. Sundae mouths a lot less now. He turned 1 year old on Feb. 18. I posted this forum the first day I subscribed to this site, and Sundae was still about a month old and was new to my home, so yeah, that was way back then. He still bites whatever he can get his teeth on, but he doesn't bite me that hard anymore, unless he gets REALLY ticked off. Anyway, thanks for the advice. |
