Hello, and welcome to the Beagle forum. I will be posting this forum to teach anybody around here on iLuvBeagles who doesn't know much information about beagles some basic information. Since I can't write a blog, I have decided to post a forum instead. If you have any questions, please feel free to post it as a reply, and I will gladly try to give advice and answers any way I can. I will also try to post some more of these forums to teach more information. Now, let's begin.
Now, what ARE beagles? They are obviously dogs, but they have a wide personality as well. They are known for their ancestor, Snoopy, slightly more independent than today's beagle. Beagles were bred somewhere around the 1400's as a scent hound to be able to chase rabbits and catch game. Its bloodline continued to form throughout the Renaissance, and continued and became the Beagle we know today. Today's beagle is slightly different than the one that was bred a few centuries ago, and is a little easier to keep. Since Beagles are true hounds, they should be kept, because if they catch a scent, they may run and follow the scent and chase the prey. They will chase rabbits, but if let, they will chase other animals, such as ducks (mine comes in handy as a duck repeller to shoo away the ducks that visit my backyard every day). When brought home, beagles should be well trained when young, and just in case, on the first car ride when you take him home, get some paper towels and lay them down on the car seat so he does his business there. Also, try to get his things the day you get him, so he is ready at home. If you are thinking about housebreaking him, you should discuss it with your trainer before getting into any housebreaking matters. The same goes for obedience training and commands. Also, they need to be sufficiently trained at a young age so they get well with the environment when they grow up. Beagles may whine when shut in the crate, and it may take a while before he grows out of that habit. Also, during his first weeks home, he may do his business on your floor or in his crate, but gets over it once he has been housebroken. Obedience training is kinda difficult for a beagle, as they may not obey you and may do their thing and engage in otherwise unacceptable behavior. Training should take at least 3 weeks or, in some cases, more. Beagles need their time to get used to training, and it will not be long before your beagle is a happy, healthy and well-trained dog. Beagles make great family pets because they get well with children and family, and because they are not dogs that lose their temper or get aggressive. However, due to their small difficulty in being kept, families need to think hard before getting a beagle. Anyway, beagles are very humble and happy dogs. Enjoy them while you can!!!! Depends. How old is your dog?

Oh excuse me XD, I completely forgot you didn't have a dog. Anyways, when you DO get a dog, you need to keep in mind that as dogs grow older, so does their appetite. If he is a few weeks old, feed him a 1/2 or whole cup of food. Make his diet increase a bit when he turns a year old, but just a little. My dog is a year old. I just feed him a whole cup and a few more millimeters of food, so he doesn't grow overweight. As he gets older, he will need a bigger diet. Feed him at least 2 cups a day when he turns 2 1/2 years old, and grow the diet a little bit more as the years pass to make sure you don't give him too much or too little than his diet requires. Anyways, thanks for replying, and I hope I answered your question! :) |
